About this deal

Colours: This art set features 48 vibrant colours in an incredible range, including a white pencil and skin tone colored pencils. The Derwent Lightfast colored pencils, made in the UK, are purposefully crafted to provide maximum lightfastness, ensuring that your artwork remains vibrant and resistant to fading. The special oils in the lead, along with other binders, allow for dense, thick strokes without having to apply significant amounts of pressure. It will also retain its sharp point for longer than a wax pencil, making it an excellent choice for sharp details.

After almost 3 years of begging and pleading; to be honest I think they only spoke with me to shut me up, nevertheless I eventually was given permission to discuss the matter with an individual from one of the major pencil companies. Due to the cheapness and the fact that there are more brand options available, wax pencils are slightly more accessible for beginners. There is so much variety in brands and forms of colored pencils that you have to find the brand that suites your style. Drawing from a decade of experience, he has garnered thousands of followers across Instagram and TikTok with his captivating artwork. Encased in an attractive hexagonal wood barrel, these pencils provide a smooth color application, vivid hues, and impressive blendability. Caran d'Ache Pablo colored pencils are water-resistant and have a core made from a mix of oil and wax. Watercolor pencils, for example, are different than traditional colored pencils and the manner in which they are used is also different.

Known for their smooth application, vibrant colors, and ease of drawing tiny details, oil-based pencils have become a favorite among artists and hobbyists alike. However, some color variances may be noticed between the label on the pencil barrel and the actual output, so testing on scratch paper is recommended. While Art-n-Fly goes on the Strathmore 400 series mixed media paper just as smooth and buttery as Derwent Lightfast, you cannot burnish the colours to blend them together as well as you can with Derwent Lightfast.

Pencils that are wax based are prone to ‘wax bloom’ which is where a build up of wax creates a cloudy film over the top of the drawing.

The color application is quite smooth and is void of wax bloom and the color intensity can be very good, although it may take a few passes. Oil-based colored pencils use vegetable oil as a binder and tend to be harder than their wax-based counterparts so they tend to hold a sharp point and experience less breakage. If you’re used to wax-based colored pencils, the cores of these pencils might be too hard for your liking. As an oil-based alternative to the pricier Caran d'Ache Luminance, these pencils feature a soft core that blends effortlessly while still providing sufficient strength to resist breakage during sharpening and drawing. I think they’re still available in acrylics and oil paints, but not in our soft core, Artist’s Grade Prismacolor pencils. Polychromos pencils feature a strong core, but Premier pencils are better for layering and burnishing.
