About this deal

Overall though, read it the book if you're a fan of 30k Horus Heresy era shennanigans and especially if you are a fan of the XXth, we don't have much material out there. How could anyone but Alpharius tell his story when he takes such pains to keep everyone around him guessing and ensure that no-one ever knows the full truth? After all you can barely trust the words spilling from the serpent’s mouth, so anyone else trying to narrate these events second hand would become so tangled in misinformation as to be not worth reading. As the resident Goonhammer Chaos Guy, you might expect that I’d jump at the chance to read a book about Alpharius’ origins. His work for Black Library includes the Horus Heresy Primarchs novel Alpharius: Head of the Hydra, the Warhammer 40,000 novels Rites of Passage, Warboss and Brutal Kunnin, the Necromunda novel Road to Redemption and the novellas Wanted: Dead and Da Gobbo’s Revenge.

Having now read the book, and digested the new details within, I can happily report my fears were not realised. I almost shelved this one part way through, while any lore bits about the Alpha Legion I'm gonna sink my teeth into, let alone about their Primarch this one started out rough. Our informants within the Inquisition slipped us an early look at something coming in March and we just had to share it with you. In the meantime, you can get the lowdown on Eisenhorn and Ravenor’s earlier investigations in the Eisenhorn omnibus , The Magos , and Ravenor: The Omnibus . Mind you there are some really good authors there as well; Dan Abnett, Aaron Dembski-Bowden, Chris Wraight and others.

Alpharius isn't the most powerful, most handsome or most charismatic of the Primarchs - by no means.

By showing us each of his brothers through Alpharius’ eyes, Brooks gives us one of the most convincing sketches of why the Primarchs were created. You can experience all of Ventris’ previous adventures in The Uriel Ventris Chronicles Volume 1 and Volume 2 , each of which contains three novels from the series plus related short stories. But Mike Brooks does deserve credit for his no bullshit, normalized representation of a same sex couple. Nate Crowley – who proved he understands greenskins in the short story ‘The Enemy of My Enemy’ – is telling the tale of the scourge of Armageddon, as related by the creature who probably knows him best.

I liked this book a bit more than the Sanguinius one I read a few weeks ago, mostly because I like Alpharius more as a character.Yes – I stated that from the outset and I’m not one of those people who feels the need to be negative just to sound “cool”.

Honestly, nothing we say here could do this moment justice, so we’ll move straight on to the back cover blurb. It is full of twists and turns typical of an Alpha Legion story but these surprises truly blew my mind.I thought the Omegon reveal in Dan Abnett’s Legion– that the Alpha Legion has not one but twin primarchs who share a soul – was extremely cool, but the notion that the Alpha Legion weren’t really traitors but were kind of maybe on humanity’s side despite working with Horus was so incredibly dumb. The beauty of warhammer 40K is making you forget that while reading the lore/stories or playing the games. Even when there are small hints that something isn’t right there’s little to no build to these events, and no chance to see the wheels in mot
