You might also want to institute rules about moving walls – but you’ll probably be keeping to the main notion of getting all your pieces to the middle of the board. Another factor Junior Player really liked was the permission to make up your own rules. If you want to adjust it so that e.g. throwing a 6 two times in a row gets you further, or gives you a penalty, for example, you can – or really whatever you fancy. We also appreciated the encouragement to experiment with the game, and make it our own – not many games directly invite you to do that.As with other games with multiple pieces, you can decide how many pieces to have in play at a time.  It’s possible to get each individual figures to the centre, one by one, but you may find that it works well to start one off, then move a second one out a bit, and so on. You, and other players, are trying to get to the centre of the maze – the Minotaur is there to stop you. If it does, you lose a (Lego) figure, but you have three, so you have more chances. Now consider that, as a game, you can see into the maze from above – so you get to see which way to go.  The minotaur is there to ‘get’ you, but nothing more serious. You are there to outwit it, and show off your cunning. And yet, it really was a good time. Both of my little geeks enjoyed it and wanted to talk about it the next day and the day after that. Their desire to actually “play” the game has been trumped by their greater excitement of creating their own labyrinths and rules, however. This is actually an exceedingly fantastic turn of events and I can’t wait to play their labyrinths by their rules. By doing so, they get to be creative and I get to teach them the subtle art of “fairness” and “balance” in game design. Bonus! LEGO games are highly customizable. For example, the instruction manual provides several different rule variants (jumping over “hedges” by replacing the #3 with a green square) to make the game more challenging. I have even seen others create much larger labyrinths for epic play! There is even a thriving mod community for LEGO games where others can share their ideas on improving, changing, or even making a brand new game. When you get this game, you get more than what is in the box. Add to it with other LEGO pieces, make your own rules, and customize it!

The Lego Minotaurus game has grown in popularity since being one of the top Christmas toys when it was new out in 2009. Despite the gloomy economic climate Lego, Europe’s biggest toymaker, is still doing well. It is probably no surprise that parents are ensuring their money is well spent on a trusted brand. You know you are getting a quality toy that is durable and will encourage creativity in your children. Realistically, you could use the same maze setup with a different Lego baddie – Darth Vader instead of the minotaur, anyone? Parents will also appreciate the potential to put the lid on at the end, and know that all the Lego is in one plate (unlike most other household Lego). When the Minotaur is in play, you get to move 8 spaces – so you’re moving faster than the other pieces, effectively.  You move from the central section, and can move towards any of the figures which may be approaching. There are no rules as to the design of the maze so it can be rebuilt to your own design or enlarged if you have pieces of your own.

Sinänsä yksinkertainen pelirunko on varmasti hyvä juttu jatkokehittelyn kannalta, ainakin nuoremmille virittelijöille.
