About this deal

Ross probably like many other fisheries has its one season fly by nights who take a permit expecting the salmon to come to them but we have lost some committed salmon anglers who for one reason or another have decided to throw in the towel on the Wye. Over 380 individual salmon flies have been catalogued for this project, representing twenty fishery districts such as Galway, Ballina, Killarney, Dublin, Ballyshannon and Lismore. These flies were often ‘dressed’ for use on specific rivers or lakes, with subtle differences in hue and colour to reflect what was believed to be the best pattern on that fishery, at a particular time of year. I have no way of telling how many salmon anglers up and down the Wye are renewing their Salmon permits for 2023 but for Ross AC I do know and we are down by one third on numbers compared to last year. I'm just glad we don't have the same level of membership costs that some on the Wye have to contend with plus the now common," exclusive access to salmon fishing from March to mid June" for considerable sums of money, WOW! Salmon angler numbers are limited by the Committee to 35 but this year with a change in Club rules any spare rods left at the end of the Salmon Membership renewal window which is 10th February are going to be given over to coarse angling applicants. This shows the clout that coarse anglers have these days and I think it is very said state of affairs.

I have now recategorised salmon fishing as “fishing” and take both a trout rod and sea trout rod with me. I just want to be out and with a chance of catching something. Shane O'Reilly of Inland Fisheries Ireland with Irish Fly-tier Peter Kealey at the launch of the publication of the 1902 Cork Fly Collection We are experiencing the collapse in the number of salmon anglers posting on here. Last year by this time we had 70 posts, this year, there are 7 posts. Truth is though, that even when I started about 20 yrs ago when the runs of salmon and sea trout were out of this world, it was never an easy river to fish but so long as I know the fish are there, blanking for nights on end has never bothered me as I consider it my fault for not solving the puzzle.

Roag Fisher is spot on, the Keeper said they’d had a good push of water 6-8 days before I fished and a good number of fish had run through into the Loch.

In July, we arrived in Mayo to be greeted by a falling flood, cloud cover and wind, i.e. conditions to die for and great for grilse in the Lough systems of that county. A fortnight later, two of us had one 3lb grilse to show for our efforts. There have been many blank days on the Ridge Pool and coincidentally, the webcam has been out of action since early July. IFI appear to be in denial and continue to pen fishing reports that make everything sound rosey. I have never been one for just reading a report on the internet, jumping in the car and heading to somewhere to try and catch a fish. For me it’s putting all the pieces in place and then when the take occurs I know I can say that I have mastered the art. Not sure that 'magazine' really does it justice, possibly better described as a collection of fly fishing short stories in a quality A4 book format? We are having problems in Scotland too and not just the West Coast. Members on here who fish the Northie and Southie are barely seeing a fish far less catch one. The Dee is trashed, the Tay poor, the Earn empty, the Teith in a bad way. In total there are 177 users online :: 5 registered, 0 hidden and 172 guests (based on users active over the past 10 minutes) was a good summer for grilse on Lewis and Harris. Good water when the fish arrived, and a good run of grilse from the end of May until in to August. I didn't fish again in North Uist, but we did have a great time before heading down to Benbecula, no fishing here either, but some great Seafood and some of the best sandcastles ever built. Boat Angling - everything welcome. The opinions expressed here are those of the private individuals, and we accept no responsibility or liability.

That's what we do at Ross. It's hard enough fishing for salmon these days we've got to share intel to put us on the water as the fish go through. Very few people are fishing the Wye on the basis that they have a good chance of a fish for the effort they put in. Very very few folk.Ayrshire, South West England, Northern Ireland, Tyne, Findhorn, Eden, Conwy, Ness, Brora, Don, Annan, Whiteadder, Nith, Wye, North and South Esk (Angus), Leven, Lochy The World Salmon Forum’s mission is to sustain wild Atlantic and Pacific salmon, seatrout, and steelhead populations for the future. Salmon diversity and abundance are a gift from the past through millions of years of evolution and adaptation. Our collective stewardship should ensure that wild salmon remain a legacy for future generations. The Yorkshire Esk is a river known for its sea trout and has the same run of large fish that you can expect on the Wear and other East Coast rivers. And yet the Angling reports from that river have usually been about fish caught on the mepps as I believe that river has a muddy colour that only in really low water has the clarity to fish the fly at night. In an attempt to try and keep the forum going, let’s recreate a thread from the past. It’ll be interesting to see how tastes have changed (or not) over the intervening 15 years…

Forum to discuss angling from kayaks, canoes, portabotes and other coastal craft. Small boat and kayak angling in Ireland. If this keeps repeating year in and out then the majority of fishing is going to be lost as these dry years have a huge impact on the aquatic life that forms part of the food chain for many other creatures.
