About this deal

It is a lot like some of the Estée Lauder ones, this: tart & sneezy & catch-in-the-throat ( laryngarpic, maybe?): a bit like Private Collection ... & I seem to remember Cinnabar, to which someone earlier compares this, being similar in that respect. Knowing also - that's another one.

Despite the fact that i was a young girl at the time, this frag seemed to exude intelligence and embodied an excerpt of civilization's history in a bottle. Kind of like Hathor mentioned: Istanbul in a bottle. I could also detect Church-like incense qualities, as Tessture mentioned. In my mind, i'd imagine the incense that was burned during the ancient and sacred nightly rituals/festivities. Sillage is modest and lasting power is average, nothing pompeuse about this frag except the bottle! The first few minutes were very challenging. I got a strong blast of alcohol and heliotrope and was convinced that this was going to smell cheap and horrible. But, after about ten minutes, the alcohol dissipated and the warmth of the vanilla crept in. I'll admit that, at this point, I started to see some resemblance to Dior Addict. And then it changed again! Twenty minutes in, and I could smell the woody notes and a musk note not unlike the one in Narciso Rodriguez's Narciso. But, ultimately, this actually reminds me a lot of YSL's Manifesto. If you know Rochas for sparkling Lumiere; dark green Mystére; complex Madame, fresh as f....Eau, well then, then you won't think much of this at all.Very durable also - it's one of those that has that characteristic of springing whiffs upon me, primarily of the nature of that sheets-on-the-line muskiness, that at first I'm convinced must be coming elsewhence, and which I'm not aware of when I first put the 'fume on ... which I would say is on the whole a good sign.

I see the comparisons with Lalique Le Parfum, yes, though the Lalique is stronger and more "masculine," all the way through, and has a more herbal and medicinal smell from the bay leaf. B2019 also reminded me of Hermes Twilly Au Poivree, though Twilly is also much stronger, from top to bottom, as well as much more peppery (and rosy). I am an Istanbulite born and raised. This indeed is "Istanbul in a bottle" as one gentle member put so well. This Byzance, is not even a fit to wear the cobalt blue of a smokey, spicy, sexy masterpiece that danced to It's a Sin. I'm very impresses with it, because this is a modern scent, very attractive, sensual, deep, sexy, comfortable and at the same time it brings some elegance and classy feel. I know it sound confusing and controversial, but that's how I feel it. There is a phase where segues into the mid notes that I'm not particularly fond of, which now that I think of it might be due to a peppery, somewhat medicinal freesia, but it passes, leaving behind a lovely, cozy autumn/winter fragrance that I enjoy. Can we talk about the bottle? When i saw it in person i was stunned! Just overall gorgeous!! I actually like this design better than the original one. But thats where my excitement about this version ends. Another point that stands out to my eyes (and nose), is the low suitability of the product for the concept. Particularly, it would make more sense for me to find the Byzance Eau de Parfum (2019) fragrance in this Byzance Gold bottle and vice versa. If you want to rich & fruity, try Alchemie instead. If you want "sweet" & powdery, try the original Tocade. Rochas WAS great once. This is definitely someone’s Signature Scent. Not mine, but someone’s! Some people are saying it’s cold. I don’t get that AT ALL. It smells warm to me, hot even, like fire. White Opulence is all I can think of. I generally find classic tuberose my least favorite note in fragrance. Jardins des Bagatelle is the only way I enjoy it until now. Byzance bursts open with a very vocal aldehyde and tuberose that for the first few minutes, can overwhelm.
