But that's the thing about this book: even the most conspiratorial McVeigh narratives start to feel deeply unsettling as Painting meticulously works her way through the fragmented pieces of Tim McVeigh's life. Either way, he was charged with the murders of Kennedy and Tippet, but adamantly denied involvement in either of the deaths.

That September, he is reported to have visited the Cuban Embassy in Mexico seeking a visa that would allow entry into Cuba where he planned to stay before traveling on to the Soviet Union. finally, it's smart, clear, and academic, but never balks at cracking a joke or forgoing edits when they might otherwise make the text feel less human; the run-ons and mistakes throughout don't distract you as much as they remind you that the author is genuinely passionate about this subject, clattering away at a keyboard in a dark room amid file cabinets, microfiche, etc.The book mentions that the building's security cameras were off during the critical hours of that morning, so there was no footage. Instead she improbably tries to maintain five theories at once, largely because, despite the more fantastical schizoid ideations tellingly lacking in tangible evidence, she can not bring herself to simply cast them aside. To her credit, Painting doesn’t really go down the tinfoil hat rabbit hole and explores (mostly) more plausible ways in which the official OKC narrative doesn’t fit the facts. That same year, he began teaching geometry and calculus courses at the University of California, Berkeley. When there's no transparency or care from a governing body, people create their own narratives - stories - which evolve and spread.
