About this deal

I did laugh at the very end of the book, where a cheeky Kellanved pats Tay on the back and says he’s lived up to the potential Kellanved saw in him. There were a few awesome moments, and a few questions answered, but that wasn't enough to make this book memorable . Sadly, the part of the books that felt the least necessary or even relevant to any of the plots was the Crimson Guardsmen plotline. The cataclysmic ending is a tad contrived, but the various storylines sync well and everything Malazan and Crimson is in fine form. That's great, as it gives us more backstory and there are SO many stories to tell in the Malazan timeline.

It just seemed like it didn't fit as I've never seen the word used (before or after, timeline wise) in Malazan world. it’s also still just so much fun to see how they interact with each other and that’s actually becoming increasingly more fun which i didn’t think was possible. We get the story, mostly, but how the cult came to dominate an otherwise peaceable (from what you can infer) people and twist things, that would have been interesting to see a little more of. Born in Winnipeg in 1962, IAN CAMERON ESSLEMONT has studied and worked as an archaeologist, travelled extensively in South East Asia and lived in Thailand and Japan for several years.

As ever, the excellent magic system (through the use of warrens) is finely showcased here and, for the most part, I found my reading experience to be extremely rewarding; leading me to score Forge of the High Mage an 8/10 rating. Never the less, it is still a very enjoyable book, and a fun look back at some of the series' best characters.

But we love this world and the characters so it gets by, even though not that much actually happens. It was thought that "people who weren't Malazan readers would look at that and it would be a meaningless title for them. I thought maybe Path of Ascendancy would follow every step of empire-making, but that would take forever and I’m guessing the goal is to touch upon the most important moments of the expansion. This book, and the ones that follow, look at "different paths and different characters' routes and story arcs". I had slightly higher hopes for the exploration of Falar, for actually going into the dark underbelly of the Jhistal cult and in that respect, this book didn’t quite hit the mark. If you've read Malazan and you like it, there's no reason not to read this book as long as you've read the three previous ones in this cycle.

These present a varied mix of interesting characters whose thoughts and feelings we are given witness to.When reading Forge of the High Mage, like previous entries in this series, it is easier to keep track of the people, places, and the plot. Here, then, in the tracts of the Ice Wastes and among the islands of Falar, the Empire of Malaz faces two seemingly insurmountable tests - each one potentially the origin of its destruction.

Dancer's Lament was the first book in the 'Paths to Ascendancy' sequence (which continues the story of the turbulent early history of this epic imagined world) while Forge of the High Mage is the fourth.I found that these were handled brilliantly, with a few special easter eggs for Malazan fans who read closely. This book really dumbs down the series and the characters, delivering a bunch of epic events and confrontations with hardly any of the emotion that the series is known for. ICE, earlier in his Malazan days, suffered the curse of being continually compared to the incomparable, Erikson. Forge of the High Mage is a book that I have been eagerly awaiting since I finished my early review copy of Kellanved’s Reach in January 2019.
