About this deal

It also celebrates the incredibly brave and dedicated explorers who used the same technique to make the first accurate maps of the world's oceans. My last book, SEXTANT, was inspired by the life-changing experience of sailing across the Atlantic in the days before GPS had reduced navigation to a matter of pushing buttons. Incredible journeys is not focused on humans, but instead examines the range of different methods used to measure position and correct. Come, step into the places where Jesus’ compassion prompted his mighty acts of healing and deliverance. Only a sailor could relate the navigational powers of both humans and animals with such appreciation, excitement, and precision.

The bulk of the book is divided over 25 short, very readable chapters in two parts: non-map and map-based navigation, with a short third concluding part containing the last two chapters. Barrie mentions well-known examples, such as bees and their famous waggle dance (heavily borrowing from The Dancing Bees: Karl Von Frisch and the Discovery of the Honeybee Language), the ability of many insects to observe polarised light (we here meet the specialised area in insect eyes that Land also described in Eyes to See: The Astonishing Variety of Vision in Nature), or the migrations of the monarch butterfly (see also Chasing Monarchs: Migrating With the Butterflies of Passage). His writing instills the same in the reader, to the point that if some of these examples do not leave you in awe, you need to check you still have a pulse. Barrie cleverly stokes readers' curiosity about the subject with short sections at the end of each chapter describing even more remarkable, still unexplained feats. Some of the scientific methods seem awful to modern eyes, but the incredible ingenuity and persistence of the animals in question continuously shines through.Frans de Waal, New York Times ‘Only a sailor could relate the navigational powers of both humans and animals with such appreciation, excitement, and precision. Publishers Weekly In INCREDIBLE JOURNEYS, award-winning author David Barrie takes us on a tour of the cutting-edge science of animal navigation, where breakthroughs are allowing scientists to unravel, for the first time, how animals as various as butterflies, birds, crustaceans, fish, reptiles and even people find their way. Navigating the world comes with its own terminology and some helpful illustrations show earth’s magnetic field, or how the sun’s path across the sky changes during the seasons.

The author makes two powerful points at the end: if we don't use our navigational skills and stop paying attention solely to GPS, we will lose that skill; and we are affecting the habitats and navigational abilities of many species due to our behavior towards the earth. However if you wish to use a tour operator who is not ATOL protected then we will take our supplier failure insurance on your behalf. SUPERNAVIGATORS is an exploration of the wonders of animal navigation, and it explains what we now know about how animals find their way around.A book about animal navigation - how creatures, great and small, find their way and how brilliantly they manage without benefit of maps or instruments - and what lessons there are for human beings. Although Barrie does mention larger animals, like crocodiles and elephants, he admits their navigational tools remain a mystery. He retires to bed, and reflects on how his friend John Hunter (Luath's owner, who lives nearly 250 miles away) received an offer for a visiting fellowship at Oxford University. Neuware - An investigation into animal navigation, how creatures find their way without the benefit of maps or instruments, and what lessons humans can learn from them.
