About this deal

Space Empires truly puts you in control of your own galaxy. It has all 4Xs that you would want in a hardcore strategy game and it’s even written on the box. It’s got to be good, right? What we Liked: The best 4X board game with a short playtime While most 4X board games are infamous for their hours-long length, Tiny Epic Kingdoms presents a distilled version of the genre. | Image credit: Gamelyn Games This is really a pity, because some tighter control over the game's known knowledge can easily increase transparency. Production is a known value, and so are the technologies, once they are announced through usage. The game begs for a technology and production table next to the board, where everybody's last turn's production and known technological accomplishments have been recorded and are there, plain as day, for everybody to see. There is no point for this game to reward memory skills outside of remembering what re-hidden ships initially were. In fact, seeing the amount of things one needs to do as a player, he is very likely not to remember what his opponents have achieved up to then. Yet, as I just said, transparency and the increased oversight that it can lead to, is an absolute priority. Would you play a multiple hours game of chess where mistakes (!) creeped in? I don't think so.

The game itself offers plenty of strategic opportunities and it’s on the simpler side for rules. It’s perfect for family game night. Although direct confrontation is built-in, it isn’t 100% necessary for victory. What we Liked:

What Curators Say

While it borrows elements from 4X, purists might argue it doesn’t fully fit the mold. This might make it a tad confusing for those expecting a traditional 4X experience. However, its innovative approach and engaging theme make it a game that’s hard to resist for strategy enthusiasts. At the conclusion of Combat, any surviving ships will send their crews into repair mode and all damage will be removed. Clash of Cultures seriously reminds me of the Civilization PC game almost more than the actual Civilization board game. It has literally everything you’d want from a 4X game and a Civ game.

I love the Tiny Epic series. Each one is its own microgame with a unique theme. They often change up the mechanics so that every entry in the Tiny Epic series is completely different. Space is full of danger. When this counter is discovered, all units there are destroyed. The hex remains empty in the future. There are Multiple Scenarios for both solitaire and 2-players. Multi-player scenarios have the option for team play, including 2 players against 1 in a 3-player game. Scenarios can be customized in length and some can be completed in as little as an hour. Many aspects of the game can be completed simultaneously by the players so that there is very little downtime. This is a game that can be completed in one sitting! Ginormous, granular and not in the least bit easy on the eyes, Space Empires places a strong emphasis on the extermination quarter of 4X. Combat is key, and while much exploration, expansion and exploitation are to be had, victory can only ultimately be achieved by vaporising your opponents in fleet battles. Interstellar travel in Space Empires is not faster-than-light drive based, but instead relies on anomalies called " warp points", essentially wormholes between two star systems. Warp points are naturally occurring but a player can open and close these warp points if she or he has the appropriate technologies. Once completed, they’re done and you can move on to the next. This creates plenty of opportunities for players to change up the traditional 4X strategy. You’ll see more hit-and-run tactics and once the objective is complete you don’t need to hold on to it for the whole game. A New Dawn offers a slightly abstracted take on PC classic Sid Meier’s Civilization, turning its epic gameplay into a fast-flowing tabletop experience. Image: Fantasy Flight Games

In Space Empires, the player assumes the role of the single leader of a race of intelligent beings that has recently acquired the technology required to build large fully space-based ships for interplanetary and interstellar travel. The game puts you in the role of a civilization that has just reached the stars and is looking to expand its reach and see what else awaits you. The answer is that a lot awaits you. You’ll discover new races, find loads of planets with resources and treasures to collect, etc. Space Empires I is the first chapter of the Space Empires series. A classic galactic conquest and turn-based strategy video game where you are the leader of a race of intelligent beings building large spaceships for interplanetary and interstellar travel through warp points between star systems. The game’s setting in the 40k universe is a treat for fans, offering a chance to command the Space Marines, Orks, Eldar, or Chaos Marines. Each faction has its unique flavor, ensuring varied gameplay. The objective-based approach is a standout, pushing players to adopt dynamic strategies. The game plays swiftly once you learn it , but should still take a minimum of 2 hours , even with just two players. There are many other details that I could go into, but in the interest of time , I need to spare those. Here are the finer points of strengths and weaknesses for this game.
