About this deal

It’s incredibly important. If you see someone like Yewande Biala (a smart biochemist who went to university early) on Love Island, that helps to normalise women in STEM. SHE’S IN Ctrl is an inspirational narrative about how women must play a part in ensuring a future that’s evenly distributed.

What to listen to now: SZA, Bleachers, Secret Sisters and more". Los Angeles Times. June 14, 2017 . Retrieved July 13, 2017. The overall mission hasn’t changed. It’s still trying to avoid that dystopian world where women aren’t involved in so many decisions. Day-to-day it’s tough – managing a team of 21 people can be tough. Especially during the pandemic and post-pandemic when there were all these new ways of working. Human beings are human beings. They’re not algorithms or databases. The book is filled with genuinely inspiring stories about current women pioneers in tech in a welcome change from the stories of Lady Lovelace, Marie Curie and the other usual suspects. The women whose stories are presented are no celebrities, but they are all changemakers of the sort that young people could aspire to become: people like Abadesi Osunsade, CEO of Hustle Crew, which helps tech companies hire from a diverse pool of expertise; and Professor Noémie Elhadad, who created an app for patients to contribute to endometriosis research by sharing their lived experience. Imafidon also writes with charm about her own experiences, starting with exploring the early internet and the devices around her home, up to her principle-based founding of Stemettes.

Dr Anne-Marie Imafidon is a keynote speaker, presenter and creator of the award-winning social enterprise, Stemettes, which inspires the next generation of females into science, technology, engineering and maths. A recognized and respected thought-leader in the tech space, in 2017 she was awarded an MBE for services to young women and STEM sectors. In 2020 she was voted the most influential women in tech in the UK by Computer Weekly. She co-hosted Countdown for 6 months between 2021 and 2022. She is currently president elect of The British Science Association. Unless specified, our public events are suitable for ages 15 and above. However for most events, younger children are more than welcome to attend with parental permission. I genuinely enjoy the maths, the tech, and learning. I also enjoy trying new things and applying what I’ve learned – that’s really been what’s driven me. Those stereotypes that people have of child geniuses and child actors are just things that didn’t play out for me in my life. Were there any role models that inspired you at that time?At this event, the Countdown host and CEO of Stemettes discusses themes from her powerful book, She’s in CTRL, including women, tech and daring to dream.
